Modifying & Enhancing Your Trailer
Whether you recently purchased a new trailer and are looking for ways to make it suit your unique needs or have an older or used trailer you want to repurpose, we have you covered. Modifying and maximizing your trailer with specific accessories can help to increase trailer load capacity, effectiveness, ride quality and more (as long as trailer owners do so responsibly and safely!).
Must-Have Accessories
This is by no means an exhaustive list of accessories you can use for your trailer, but these are some of the most common and helpful ones we provide our customers with.
Upgrade your trailer with some common and useful accessories, such as:
- Step pads. A heavy-duty step pad is a great accessory to have on hand to ensure no one is risking injury by leaping up into the trailer or trying to reach tall items within or on top of the trailer.
- Tow hooks. Tow hooks can meet the demands of muddy fields, overrun forestry and uneven dirt roads. These come with a 10,000-pound gross weight capacity, making them an ideal accessory for those who travel far and wide.
- Equalizers. Trailer equalizers help to continuously pivot and compress, isolating and absorbing road shock. This makes for a much smoother ride.
- Spare tire mount. Your trailer should have one as well. A hitch-mounted spare tire allows you to store it outside the trailer, freeing up more space inside as well.
- Cargo carrier. From transporting large luggage to hauling your camping supplies, having extra space to carry cargo is never a bad thing.
- Trailer coupler lock. Unfortunately, horse trailers and boat trailers are some of the most vulnerable trailer types to theft. Invest in towing security with a trailer coupler lock that will deter any thief from making your trailer their next target.
- Wheel chocks. If you’re concerned about parking your trailer on a hill or uneven ground and the trailer potentially moving, you need a wheel chock. Wheel chocks are wedges made of sturdy metal and can effectively keep your trailer in place.
- Leaf springs. Most trailers come with coil springs, but upgrading to leaf springs can increase your trailer’s ability to handle heavy cargo by spreading the load more widely across the chassis.
- Covers. There are numerous parts to a trailer, and when exposed to the elements, certain things like hitch tubes, wheel bearings and springs can become clogged, rusted or damaged. Find the perfect covers for each area of your trailer and protect your investment for years to come!
- Toolboxes and organizers. When traveling long distances with a trailer, it’s always recommended to have a handy toolbox available. Similarly, to keep your trailer organized, mounting a cabinet can help to keep things tidy and accessible.

In addition to adding accessories to your trailer, you can increase its trailer load capacity and strength with certain additions and modifications. These modifications should be performed by an expert, as it often requires welding additional beams and supports to the existing trailer.
