Tow Hooks & Tow Straps
A tow hook can be a useful accessory to your vehicle in a sticky situation. It can be used for vehicle recovery towing or simply for straight-line towing. There are a few options for mounting a tow hook to your vehicle including bumper-mounted and hitch-mounted. As the names suggest, bumper-mounted tow hooks are bolted onto the bumper while hitch-mounted tow hooks insert into the receiver tube of a front or rear mount hitch.
Tow straps are made of less-stretchy polyester with hooks sewn onto each end. Not to be confused with recovery straps, tow straps are intended only for towing a freely-moving vehicle behind another tow vehicle. It is not recommended to use tow straps to recover a stuck vehicle. They can break under the pressure of recovery causing the hooks to launch through the air at a high rate of speed resulting in damage to vehicles or bystander injuries.
Recovery straps are made of nylon that stretch when necessary and are designed to be used with tow hooks or tow strap mounts. The biggest difference recovery straps have in comparison to tow straps is their elasticity. They also have loops on either end instead of hooks making them safer to use during vehicle recovery.
