Taillight Converters
Having working taillights and turn signals on your trailer is a must-have for safe towing. It’s also the law that cars behind you are able to know when you are braking, changing lanes or making turns. In Virginia, trailers must be equipped with at least one red brake light on the rear of the vehicle that is visible from a distance of 500 feet.
Most modern vehicles have a 3-wire or separate lighting system. These types of systems will have separate circuits for turn signals and brake lights. Trailers use a 2-wire or combined system meaning the same circuit is used for both the turn signals and brake lights.
If your towing vehicle is not equipped with a wiring connection or plug-in socket for your trailer, a taillight converter will be needed as a splice-in alternative. The taillight convert is an electrical component that converts the 3-wire electrical system of your towing vehicle into a standard 2-wire trailer wiring. In other words, it takes the separate signals coming from the towing vehicle and combines them so the lights on the trailer will operate properly.
